Chapter 5: Brainwashing
You hear about it all the time. A person has been âbrainwashedâ to think a certain way. This type of mind control can cause people to do things that are out of character all the time and in significant ways. You might feel that you are immune to the act of being brainwashed because you are not weak, but even the strongest minds are still able to become brainwashed when they encounter the right manipulator. When you are brainwashed, you are essentially living a life that is not meant for you. It does not take into consideration your hopes, dreams, and desires. Instead, it is a path that has been chosen for you. Eventually, you will end up believing that this is the right option for you or that you came up with the idea yourself. It is a scary process that doesnât take long at all to infiltrate your brain.
There are several ways that you can become brainwashed. It is a pretty low likelihood that you will encounter a single person that has the ability to brainwash you completely, but there are definitely shady characters that will try. With a combination of political brainwashing and advertisement brainwashing, you will find yourself acting out in ways you never have before. One of the most interesting things is that you probably wonât even realize you are doing it. When you are brainwashed, it is almost like you are being cut off from your subconscious. The only things you can think, say, or do are influenced by other people or events.
Brainwashing can occur for several months, even years. There are countless survivorâs tales of people who have escaped from cults that they have spent almost their entire lives in because they thought it was what they were supposed to do. When someone else or something else has this much control over your brain, it is a scary thought. This is something that you need to avoid for your own safety and well-being. Having a solid support system is always going to help determine if you are acting out of character. If someone who knows you well expresses that you are different, it might be a good idea to explore what they are claiming.
Ask them to elaborate, and then evaluate yourself. Why are you acting this way? Have you ever acted this way before? If you havenât, what is causing you to do so now? Getting to the root of these situations by asking yourself questions is a great way to keep your brain active and involved. Understand that the people who care about you donât want to hurt or offend you. If they say that you are acting unlike yourself, they are coming from a place of concern. You should at least look into it by grounding yourself with those questions before you brush them off.
